Nutritional and Multidisciplinary Management in Guillain–Barré Syndrome: A Case Study

Here Mrs. Haritha Shyam is  discusses the nutritional and clinical management of a 44-year-old patient with Guillain–Barré Syndrome (GBS), a neurological disorder causing muscle weakness.

  • The patient required mechanical ventilation and was started on enteral nutrition early
  • Due to feeding intolerance, parenteral nutrition (TPN) was introduced temporarily
  • A stepwise nutrition approach was followed:
    • Enteral feeding → Semi-elemental diet → TPN → Oral diet transition
  • High-protein, calorie-adequate nutrition helped in:
    • Preventing malnutrition
    • Supporting neuromuscular recovery
  • Over time, the patient showed significant weight regain and improved tolerance
  • A multidisciplinary approach (dietitians, doctors, physiotherapy) was key to recovery
